Momenteel speelt hij de pannen van het dak bij PSV maar in de jeugd speelde hij voor Ajax. Hij speelde daar met Abdelhak Nouri en samen waren zij een erg goed duo.
Hij heeft echter nooit spijt gehad van zijn overstap naar Eindhoven, zo vertelt hij in De Telegraaf: “Mijn vader wist gewoon dat ik het niet meer zag zitten bij Ajax. Als je zoon het niet wil, dan doe je als vader alles om hem daar weg te krijgen.”
Het verhaal gaat dat de vader van Bergwijn met een witte zakdoek stond te zwaaien voor de neus van trainer Orlande Trustfull. “Ik moet eerlijk zeggen: ik heb hem daar nooit naar gevraagd. Ik was gewoon blij dat het zover was. Dat ik kon gaan. Ik mocht wel naar het volgende elftal bij Ajax, maar voor mij was het klaar. Dat had niks met de club te maken, maar puur met een aantal mensen dat er toen zat. Die zijn nu allemaal weg. Het is ook al weer een tijdje geleden natuurlijk.”
