Gisteren speelde Manchester United de stadsderby tegen Manchester City en Donny van de Beek zat weer eens 90 minuten op de reservebank. Volgens voormalig bondscoach Louis van Gaal heeft de oud-Ajacied een verkeerde keuze gemaakt voor zijn nieuwe club.
“Ik vind dat hij geen goede keuze gemaakt”, vertelde Van Gaal tegenover Ziggo Sport over de keuze van Van de Beek. De oud-coach was aangeschoven als analist voor de derby van Manchester, die dus zonder inbreng van Van de Beek doelpuntloos eindigde. “Als je Bruno Fernandes en Paul Pogba hebt, waar moet Van de Beek dan spelen?”, vroeg hij zich hardop af. Bovendien: zelfs als de twee sterkhouders niet spelen, is een basisplaats voor Van de Beek geen zekerheid.
Van Gaal schat Fernades en Pogba allebei hoger in dan Van de Beek. “Dat had je van te voren kunnen zien”, zei Van Gaal. “Volgens mij zijn er heel veel clubs waar hij beter tot zijn recht zou komen, ook bij topclubs. Van de Beek is een jongen met heel veel kwaliteit en ik hoop dat zijn tijd nog komt. Maar ik vind dat hij niet een goede keuze heeft gemaakt. Dat zei ik meteen al.”
