In de achtste finales van de Champions League spelen Ajax en Real Madrid tegen elkaar. In het verleden was Leo Beenhakker trainer van beide clubs. Real Madrid is de laatste jaren weliswaar oppermachtig in het miljoenenbal, maar de oud-trainer van beide clubs ziet nu een andere situatie.
“Ik denk dat ze niet kansloos zijn, omdat Madrid nogal in een dipje zit”, stelt Beenhakker in Panenka. “Het loopt er niet zoals het hoort te lopen bij zo’n club. Ze gaan daar in een fifty-fifty wedstrijd naartoe. Ik zie Ajax twee keer tegen Bayern. Als dat de maatstaf is, en ik zie ook regelmatig wedstrijden op televisie van Madrid, dan is het een open wedstrijd.”
Toch weet Beenhakker ook dat het in de achtste finales weer héél anders kan zijn. “We hebben het over nu, maar het kan zijn dat Madrid over drie maanden ontploft en Ajax wegzakt, of andersom. Het zijn allemaal mensen, dat vergeten we weleens.”
